1896 Production Complex

At the heart of the Johnson/Stewart/Gardner/Ingraham block is The 1896 Studios. The vaulted factory spaces are now used for photoshoots and movie making. What is amazing to me, is that because of this, the 1896 has a website that documents all of these spaces in order to show producers what is being offered. Nearly every wall in an inner courtyard which would be invisible to me otherwise is photographed and displayed on the 1896 site. The grey "d" shaped footprint above is the inner yard.

I have to admit loosing a little steam this last week. I spent the weekend before the july fourth working exclusively on this production complex model, and was kind of overcome by a "what is it all for" malaise. I am hoping santa comes tonight and I wake up with 220 Ingraham and Flushing Wireless on GE in the morning, that always gives me new energy. This Complex has been kind of a bitch though. I've spent too long cleaning up bad geometry and trying to figure out where errors were made. It's mostly clean now though, so this weekend I'll be submitting it no doubt.

The former D'Angelo Auto Parts and garage is now a warehouse courtyard for the 1896 it seems.

Which kind of brings me back to, why is this so hard anyway? A few things. Right now, my bluetooth is sluggish. My eyes are bad and i haven't replaced my glasses. those are little things. Trying to build an accurate 3 dimensional complex form from a collection of 2D photos is challenging. I think that's why I do it, as well as the satisfaction of placing the model, toying with it in space, exploring points of view… this is the kind of thing where the result seems inevitable, but truly, I doubt two people would make the same model. And they don't, which is why the better model will always replace a lesser one on GE.

I have to remember that the result will make the impact. until then, these are only a few blocks… but slowly… when the whole emerges, the project will have worth. I have to dedicate myself to this belief. Otherwise, there is absolutely no fucking point to this.

Painting is similar. However, painting produces something that can be sold, and is a recognized form of art. In dark times, I do not see this as art… is there a difference between the man who draws a skyline and the one who uses equipment to model it? Is the fact that google is a brand, and anyone can make a geo-model, a demerit to the concept? I say, because there is a quality involved, and observation, and manipulation of tools… this can be art. Like some art though, the impact has to be in the scope. One knot is not a big deal, but a room full of knots, of a certain material, lit in some way, which you can walk around, you see where I'm going.

For this to be worthwhile I have to continue.
